The Black River Canyon run features more than one dozen class III / IV whitewater rapids that take you through the historic ruins of the once thriving industrial center of old Watertown, NY. Before the turn of the 20th century, mill operators counted on the consistent flows of the Black River for power. A "blackwater" river, the Black River is rich in tannins from the pine forests of the Adirondack mountains. These tannins naturally darken the color of the water. This natural source of tannic acid was used by enterprising businessmen to establish tanneries along the river's bank. Health benefits of the slightly acidic tannins reportedly range from preventing blisters to the promotion of clotting during wisdom tooth extraction.
The main run's longest and most challenging rapid, class IV Knife's Edge brings you through the base of an old mill. The impressive rapid with multiple lines can be scouted and portaged on river right.
As you drift past the last of the weathered stone structures of Watertown's heyday, you enter a pristine natural retreat. The high walled Black River Canyon is lush with plant and wild life including a rare breed of albino eagle indiginous to the region. The rapids in the canyon are rich with variety. Intermediate boaters will be content to safetly navigate the forgiving channels of the main lines while experts will find challenging diversions through the many hero lines and optional bonus rapids. Every rapid flushes in to a warm, calm pool and there are beautiful settings for swimming and cliff jumping. Several waterfalls spill out from cracks in the limestone canyon walls.
To run through the canyon, a recreational release from Dángèr Dam is required. Releases occur most days during the summer release season. The easiest way to ensure you will have water is to tag along with one of the whitewater rafting trips.
